Hood River Co., Oregon
County Capsule
Hood River County had an estimated population of 18,914 in 1995, up from 16,903 in 1990. The county lost population during the economic downturn of the early 1980's, but from 1983 on has seen steady but restrained growth. Cascade Locks and Hood River - the county's only incorporated communities have grown, as have the unincorporated communities and areas of the county. People relocating to the area are attracted by the rural lifestyle, recreational opportunities, scenic beauty and proximity to Portland.
Hood River County covers 533 square miles, including eastern portions of 11,235 -foot Mt. Hood. The primary natural resource is the fertile farm land of the Hood River Valley, an area including more than 14,000 acres of commercial apple, cherry, pear and peach orchards. Along with other agriculture, orchard crops, provide much of the county's economic base.
The City of Hood River remains the Gorge capital for the sport of boardsailing. Manufacturers of boards, sails, clothing and other gear for the sport have located there in recent years, and residential property values have increased rapidly as many windsurfers have purchased second homes or moved to the area.
Continuing that upward trend, property values in Hood River County rose by almost $100 million between 1993 and 1994. Appraised values rose an average of 12.5% in Hood River and 24% in the south-county community of Parkdale, according to county records. The county's total value rose roughly 12.4%, from $791.63 in 1993 to $890.2 million in 1994. The county's assessed value has increased by more than 45% since 1990.
